“Cultural fit” has been talked about often recently when looking at hiring decisions for businesses, as well as with new entrants looking for employment in companies which fit their ideals. Jerome Parisse-Brassens talks to us about what culture really is in a business environment…
What is “Walking The Talk”?
A cultural change organisation who helps businesses design a culture that is suited to them. They have hubs all over the world.
What is culture and what can it do for organisations?
Culture encompasses, values, beliefs and “the way we do things around here”. It is the patterns of behaviour that are encouraged or tolerated by an organisation, regardless of what their values are espoused to be.
If you think about companies such as News Of The World where inappropriate behaviour was encouraged, this is an example of organisational culture that tolerated certain behaviours despite what their mission statement or published company values may have stated – that is true culture.
On the flipside of course, other organisations have a very healthy culture – the important part is whether that culture is fit for purpose. “Fit for purpose” involves aligning culture with strategy.
What is culture “not”?
Talent management – that’s about choosing the right people but is not managing culture. Culture is also not engagement – that is the level of motivation people have to work in an organisation, whereas culture is the environment they work in. Engagement can be an outcome of culture.
